"Untitled (Card Trick)" by Paul Valadez Acrylic Photo: Nancy Moyer
Recent works by Paul Valadez show a controlled flair for light-hearted imagery. “Sleight of Hand” is a trip down memory lane for this artist. It will be on display at the South Texas College Library Art Gallery downstairs throughout summer.
As one of our most prolific local artists, Valadez brings a new subject to us – magic tricks. Each painting is direct in its imagery and reminisces a magic trick in a mid-20th century illustration style. Although the artist often expresses his early personal experiences in the central Valley of California, this exhibit contains childhood memories for anyone growing up in America at that time. Each painting depicts an illustration of a magic trick that might have embellished its packaging, or been used as an advertisement for a toy set of magic tricks. “Untitled (Card Trick)” shows a stereotypical magician, complete with goatee and moustache, divining the right card. “Untitled (Gone)” shows two hands, open and empty. A puff of smoke above them announces “Gone!”
