EVENTS: Shrine Circus Spectacular [Sept. 2-4, Hidalgo]

Tiger, elephants and daredevils, oh my! Take the family to the most amazing show on earth this weekend. The 2011 Al Amin Shrine Circus Spectacular will be coming to Hidalgo’s State Farm Arena. The Valley has the opportunity to catch one of five circus performances, each featuring a variety of animals and stunts from some of the world’s most talented performance artists. The show will feature Bruno Blaszac’s Bengal Tigers, Bo the Elephant and acrobats and clowns. The audience will also have the opportunity to join circus performers in the ring to meet the stars of the show, take photographs and ride ponies and elephants. Get a look at the world of digital photography during a presentation by photographer Chris Jordan at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen. The Seattle photographer will share tips and tricks about the art of photography in a technologically advanced era during the “A Glimpse into Digital Photography” lecture. Afterwards, Jordan will take questions from the audience. Jordan’s exhibit “Running the Numbers” is currently on display at IMAS through December.

Friends in Need will host a barbecue benefit for the family of Abel Padron at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the McAllen Cahmber of Commerce parking lot. The family is looking for help to pay off medical expenses. Barbecue plates, which include half a chicken with all the trimmings, will be sold for $7.
