Participate in a 5k run in McAllen

McAllen will host the McPumpkin Run, a 5K run designed to prepare runners for a longer race in November, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Palm View Golf Course.

The cost is $10 in advance or $15 the day of the event.

Celebrate Day of the Dead at the museum

The Museum of South Texas History will host a celebration for Day of the Dead 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

This is an annual event. There will be mariachi music, a one act play and several festival-style activities. It also features a a performance by the City of Edinburg Parks and Recreation Folklorico Dance Team, led by Rebeka Gonzalez. Dancers from the group recently traveled to a performance in Brazil.

There will be traditional foods such as fish tacos, tacos de trompo, pan dulce, elote and aguas frescas.

Day of the Dead is a major part of Mexican culture where people remember and honor deceased loved ones.

Valley writer’s host film contest

Writer’s in Literary Discussion will host an original film contest. The entries will screen 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at South Texas College Pecan Campus Building D Auditorium.

Prizes will be award by Barnes and Nobles, and winners will be determined by 50 percent audience vote and 50 percent judges.

1) Your film is on VHS or DVD.
2) 40 minutes or less
3) The film has a plot

Ride in the Filemon B. Vela Memorial Bike Tour

Brownsville will host the Filemon B. Vela Memorial Bike Tour, a fundraiser to generate money for college scholarships, at 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 9.

Riders will leave from Memorial Park, which is next to the federal courthouse in Brownsville. You can pre-register at any Bicycle World in the Valley.

The Valley Nature Center is going to die

The Valley Nature Center is hosting “Dead Woods,” a set of haunted trails, on Saturday, Oct. 8, and Saturday, Oct. 15.

Film crew needs sound and lighting help in McAllen

A Los Angeles-based film production company needs a sound mixer/technician and a gaffer/lighting technician.

New Boyz to perform one of new year’s first shows in McAllen

The hip hop duo behind 2009′s catchy rap hit “You’re a Jerk” will perform at McAllen’s Club Privat early next year, according to pollstar.com.

The New Boyz, also known for the track “Tie Me Down” (a collaboration with rapper Ray J of Kim Kardashian sex tape fame) are set to play Saturday, Jan. 7.

Club Privat is located at 501 S. 17th St in Downtown McAllen.

Visit the butterfly hot spots throughout the Valley

The Edinburg World Birding Center will host a butterfly van tour, a driving tour that visits the most butterfly-laden locales in the Valley, at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.
