UTPA art professor presents exhibit at Upper Valley Art League in Mission

Rey Santiago will be presenting the “Presence Art Collection” with an art reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Upper Valley Art League in the Kika de la Garza Fine Arts Building in Mission.

Santiago is an art professor at the University of Texas-Pan American. Born in Germany, Santiago is an immigrant to the United States and the topic of immigration is reflected in much of his art.

He has participated in exhibitions all over the world, including France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and Australia.

McAllen native wins state theatre award

Kathryn Ballinger, a McAllen native and student at McMurry University in Abilene, TX, won the Texas Educational Theatre Association’s annual Playfest competition with her submission of “Things We Can’t Untie.”

She wrote the play earlier this year in a playwriting course and the original play will be performed in the spring of 2012.

In January, the McMurry Theatre department will be given the chance to present a reading of “Things We Can’t Untie” at the TETA Theatrefest in Houston.

Graduate students will present fine art exhibit at UTPA

University of Texas-Pan American graduate students Victoria Hidalgoand Eduardo Quintero will feature their graduate fine arts exhibit at the university’s Clark Gallery in the Fine Arts building starting Monday, Oct. 24 through Thursday, Nov. 3, in Edinburg.

A closing reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3.

Alfresco Weslaco will feature jazz trio in October

Alfresco Weslaco, the city’s monthly outdoor festival, will feature the Veronica Sanchez Trio at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, downtown on Texas Boulevard.

In addition to the “Jazz on the Street,” the fest will also be host to art exhibits, wine and food, such as crepes, tacos, homemade ice cream and Italian sodas.

Bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show.

Pharr Literacy Project and Cultural Arts Center announces new theater season

Make plans to be entertained and educated throughout the year by the Pharr Literacy Project and Cultural Arts Center. The group announced several events in its 2011-2012 season.

Each Friday night in October, Pharr will offer rides on a haunted trolley tour.

In November, catch an original stage production, “Tales of the Hidalgo Pumphouse,” directed by Pedro Garcia. Show dates are Thursday, Nov. 10, through Sunday, Nov. 13, and Thursday, Nov. 17, through Sunday, Nov. 20.

Celebrate the holidays in a fun and unique way with a “Friday Night Murder Mystery” show. “Ho Ho Homicide” features you in an interactive mystery where you help Santa figure out who committed murder.

There will also be performances by the Children’s Community Choir Thursday, Dec. 1, through Saturday, Dec. 3.

The popular “Friday Night Murder Mystery” returns in January as dinner theater and takes on a pirate theme. “Tales of the Hidalgo Pumphouse” also makes an encore with performances Thursday, Jan. 12, through Sunday, Jan. 15.

In February, secure a seat for “The River is Gold,” a senior theater production, which will be performed every Friday night.

Keka Kuri’s art featured at Fiorella

A reception featuring the art of Keka Kuri will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Fiorella Restaurant in McAllen.

The contemporary artist’s exhibit will benefit Miradas de Esperanza, an institute for the blind located in Reynosa, Mexico.

McAllen Library prepares for October Art Walk

The McAllen Public Library will be hosting several artists for Art Walk at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.

The first Friday of each month, September through May, Main Street businesses and other surrounding Downtown McAllen venues stay open a bit longer for Art Walk.

Painted fabric art, abstract paintings, landscapes, ornaments, photography and charcoal works will be displayed by artists such as Patsy Thurn, Crissy Mitchell, Lydia Maatouk, Janie Rodriguez, Astrid Ramirez Aridjis and Ruben Valente. The Valley Artistic Outreach will also present its art.

A hands-on craft project featuring paper leaf baskets will be offered for children and teens.

Also, find out about the new library from staff that will be present. The new library is due to open in December.

B-Boy Warefare begins Friday in McAllen

A $200 prize is up for grabs for the b-boy who wins the one-on-one battle at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Susy’s Dance and Fitness Studio in McAllen.

The entry fee is $5, and special guest breaker Tare will be there to judge. Tare is a member of the Unique Styles Crew from Florida.
