Operation Hope for the Border set for Spring Break 2012

Marisela to perform in November at McAllen Civic Center

The prolific “Latin Madonna” Marisela will be performing at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the McAllen Civic Center.

Marisela released her first album “Sin El” in 1984, and 14 more full-length albums followed over the decades.

The $40 and $80 tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. They can be purchased at the McAllen Convention Center box office, located at 700 Convention Center Blvd., or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

Pharr Literacy Project and Cultural Arts Center announces new theater season

Make plans to be entertained and educated throughout the year by the Pharr Literacy Project and Cultural Arts Center. The group announced several events in its 2011-2012 season.

Each Friday night in October, Pharr will offer rides on a haunted trolley tour.

In November, catch an original stage production, “Tales of the Hidalgo Pumphouse,” directed by Pedro Garcia. Show dates are Thursday, Nov. 10, through Sunday, Nov. 13, and Thursday, Nov. 17, through Sunday, Nov. 20.

Celebrate the holidays in a fun and unique way with a “Friday Night Murder Mystery” show. “Ho Ho Homicide” features you in an interactive mystery where you help Santa figure out who committed murder.

There will also be performances by the Children’s Community Choir Thursday, Dec. 1, through Saturday, Dec. 3.

The popular “Friday Night Murder Mystery” returns in January as dinner theater and takes on a pirate theme. “Tales of the Hidalgo Pumphouse” also makes an encore with performances Thursday, Jan. 12, through Sunday, Jan. 15.

In February, secure a seat for “The River is Gold,” a senior theater production, which will be performed every Friday night.

CholoRock Theatre’s choreographer to appear at UTPA in November

Jose Zamora, the artistic director and choreographer for the Texas-based dance group CholoRock Theatre, will be teaching a dance workshop from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

The workshop will focus on jazz and post-modern dance. It is open to the public and costs $50 per person.

Zamora trained as a folklorico dancer in La Joya, and then relocated to Denton, TX, where he trained in post-modern dance. He created CholoRock three years ago to help preserve and celebrate his Mexican heritage.

Golf tournament to raise money for Valley students

Tee up to help send a local Valley student to college and you could win a golf trip for two to Las Vegas.

United Blood Services will be hosting the first annual Golf For Life tournament fundraiser at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11, at the Palm View Golf Course in McAllen.

UBS collects more than half of the blood needed in the RGV through blood drives at local schools, so to give back, the organization provides more than $15,000 in scholarships to students.

Golf For Life will raise money for those scholarships and awareness on the importance of donating blood.

Golfers will receive beer, lunch and dinner at the event, along with gift bags, prizes and a chance to win a golf trip for two in Las Vegas.

Twilight Saga returns to theaters for one night

Fans of the “Twilight” film series, based on the novels by Stephanie Meyer, will be treated to a return of the first three films to the big screen in McAllen and Harlingen.

“Twilight” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1; “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8; and “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Cinemark Hollywood USA in McAllen and Cinemark 16 in Harlingen.

The screenings include never-before-seen footage, including a clip of Robert Pattinson performing “Bella’s Lullaby,” plus interviews with cast members and footage from fan fests. This is all leading up to the Friday, Nov. 18, premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.”

Creative Journal author to speak at Penitas Library

Dr. Lucia Capacchione will be offering a workshop on identifying feelings at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Penitas Public Library.

Bring books by the author to be signed, and an unlined journal for the workshop.

Capacchione has written books on healing and growth through creative expression, including “Recovery of Your Inner Child,” “The Creative Journal” and “Visioning: 10 Steps to Designing the Life of Your Dreams.”
