LIVE MUSIC: Miniature Tigers [Thu. Sept. 15, McAllen]

September 7th, 2011, 2:33 pm by

Miniature Tigers, an indie/dream pop band based out of Brooklyn, will return Thursday, Sept. 15, to McAllen for the first time since last year’s Fun Day event.

Did that jog your memory?

Well, if not you have two choices. You can head to YouTube and watch a video of their hit song “Gold Skull,” which was actually shot at Fun Day in McAllen by local videographer Gabriel Elizondo. It’s a great song, and it should give you a decent idea of what to expect at the show.

Still not satisfied? Well then my friend, keep reading. Amid yet another tour in preparation for a new album, Miniature Tigers’ Charlie Brand took time out to answer some questions for us.

This video was shot in McAllen

Miniature Tigers

WITH: Sick/Sea and Darm Darm Dudes

WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15

WHERE: Cine El Rey, 311 S. 17th St., McAllen

COST: $8 if purchased in advance from Fallback Records in McAllen or $10 the day of the show

ONLINEhttp://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=220022081362021

Q: What can fans expect from your next album “Mia Pharoah”?

A: I feel like there’s something for everyone on it. People who liked the pop of “Tell it to the Volcano” will be pleased, and fans of the more psychedelic stuff will find something there, too. I describe it as sort of a “Bridge Over Troubled Water” meets Top 40 hip hop/pop.

Q: When is it due out?

A: The record is written and partially recorded. We’re looking to finish it in October after this upcoming tour, with the hopes of releasing it in spring of 2012.

Q: Do you expect a different response from fans than you got for “Fortress”?

A: I never really know what to expect in that regard. I can never tell how people are going to react, which is probably a good thing. If I were aware it might mess up the writing process. I think people were thrown off at the departure we made on “Fortress.” I’m hoping we can throw people through a loop again in almost the opposite way, with pop this time. I think we get off on surprising people or shattering people’s expectations of us.

Q: Collectively, where’s your favorite place to eat on the road?

A: That’s such a difficult question! I feel like we look forward to different sections of the country and what they have to offer. We all come together on Mexican food. However, you can’t find good mexican food everywhere. I look forward to Texas, Arizona and Southern California for that because outside of that, the Mexican food is inauthentic. There was also this place in Houston called Mai’s that was our favorite spot to eat but it burned down. Culinary tragedy.

Q: What would you name Beyoncé and Jay Z’s unborn child?

A: Steve

Q: If you weren’t making music, what would be your top 5 other career choices?

A: If I wasn’t making music, I don’t know that I’m really qualified for anything other than flipping burgers. I’d love to be a film director or a painter though.

Q: Favorite ‘80s song?

A: Right now, “Baby Be Mine” by Michael Jackson or “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper.

Q: Favorite hip hop song?

A: My favorite in the last while was Rick Ross “Aston Martin Music.” It’s so hard to pick just one though.

Q: What movie has the best live music scene?

A: Billy Madison, ‘Billy passed the third grade, oh what a glorious day!’

THE FESTIVA INTERVIEW: Iwrestledabearonce

July 21st, 2011, 1:36 pm by

Avant-garde metal band Iwrestledabearonce isn’t afraid of a little controversy. This spring, the group pranked the rock world when they announced they were changing their musical direction. “Black metal” became their new identity and pictures of the quintet in gothic garb had black metal fans up in arms. But guitarist Stephen Bradley said they were just having a little fun.

“We figured everybody would know it was a joke,” Bradley said. “I guess people never learn, I don’t know why, they believed it.”

The band is known for its sense of humor and genre-bending rock, which often jerks back and forth from a variety of styles including jazz, disco, swing and metal.

The Shreveport, La., quintet is one of 24 bands that will be performing Friday, July 22, as part of the All Stars Tour at Las Palmas Racepark in Mission. The lengthy lineup of up-and-coming metal core bands includes Emmure, Alesana, Blessthefall and Norma Jean.

Iwrestledabearonce is currently sharing a bus with death core group Chelsea Grin as part of the tour. And even though the bus is cramped with rock star power, he admits it’s better than touring the country in a van.

“It’s nice to be able to relax and sleep, as opposed to never sleeping and being miserable all the time,” Bradley said.

Bradley took some time out at a recent stop in El Paso to talk to Festiva about the band’s new album, “Ruining It For Everybody,” his must-have tour essentials and what’s next on the band’s horizon.

How is the new album different from your previous record, “It’s All Happening”?

“It’s just way better, it’s more extreme in every direction, the heavy stuff is heavier, the soft stuff is catchier. We just tried to go out of our way to make the record make more sense but still be even weirder and heavier. I think it’s way more cohesive — it’s easier to listen to and the songs are way better structured while still being weird.”

Avant-garde metal blends together a variety of genres. Where does the inspiration come from when writing a song?

“We’re not scared to do the dumb ideas. We know other bands who are limited to one thing where as with us somebody is drunk and says, ‘Hey we really need a surf part,’ and we write a damn surf part. Other bands they’ll be like ‘Oh, we can’t do that, people will hate it, that’s weird.’ We’re like ‘It’s (expletive) weird! Perfect!’”

One thing you never leave home without?

“Our tour dog Milla. She’s a peekapoo … she’s really the most laid-back dog of all time. Other than that, the old laptop. I think with no laptops at this point we’d be in trouble. I gotta be able to Skype, gotta be able to write music and Google stupid videos on YouTube. I can say a tour is a lot better with an iPhone and GPS as well.”

How is the new album different from “It’s All Happening”?

“It’s just way better. It’s more extreme in every direction — the heavy stuff is heavier, the soft stuff is catchier. We just tried to go out of our way to make the record make more sense but still be even weirder and heavier. I think it’s way more cohesive. It’s easier to listen to and the songs are way better structured while still being weird.”

What is next for Iwrestledabear?

“We actually just finished a movie, ‘cause we’re out of our minds. We shot it on a legit budget, shot it on Red cameras, those $80,000 cameras that Michael Bay uses, we got nuts with it we shot a legitimate movie with a lot of (expletive) jokes a lot of gore and a lot of craziness. It’s going to be out on Halloween because it’s horror movie-ish. It’s like Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ versus Michael Jackson’s ‘MoonWalker’ except nothing like any of those.”

HOW DID THEY GET THEIR NAME? Gary Busey’s blurted out the words in a Comedy Central special.

Valley contestant on ‘Top Model’ won’t let elimination get in way of dreams

March 24th, 2011, 5:53 pm by

Sara Longoria didn’t have a viewing party to watch herself get eliminated on last week’s episode of “America’s Next Top Model” — she had to work.

The 19-year-old Edinburg native did, however, catch the recorded show on her friend’s DVR player, and she doesn’t blame anyone but herself for getting sent home.

“It’s a competition and the person who produces the poorest work and the weakest work deserves to go home, and this week, consistently, actually, it was me,” Longoria said. “… I’m glad that when I was eliminated, I had a legitimate excuse to be eliminated for, not some reality TV show editing or because I had a bad attitude.”

In Longoria’s final episode of ANTM, she had a conversation with fellow model and housemate Alexandria which implied Longoria did not want to pursue modeling after the show, or that she may not have the same amount of passion.

The Festiva Interview: Neon Trees

Pop band Neon Trees has had a hectic schedule over the last year due to the smash dance hit “Animal” from the band’s debut “Habits.”

The band’s first stop will be at Never Say Never Fest and then on to Austin for South by Southwest.

Bass player Branden Campbell took some time to talk to Festiva about Neon Trees’ next album, instant gratification and which bands he’s totally obsessed with right now.

Party Harder: Andrew W.K. doles out party tips for Spring Break

March 11th, 2011, 10:59 am by

For more than a decade, Andrew W.K. has dedicated his life to one philosophy – party hard.

He’s written songs, given motivational speeches and started arguably the most consistently awesome account on Twitter. His message throughout has been simple – make life a party and then party hard.

Today marks the beginning of Spring Break 2011, when universities across the state take a week-long hiatus. That means South Padre Island fills up with college students trying to take their minds off school with sand, libations, and, ahem, romance.

Andrew W.K. has graciously provided some party tips for this year’s festivities.  In a recent phone conversation with “Festiva,” he shared some of his expertise. He’s never been to the Island, but we told him about it. And now he wants to go. It is a party, after all.

Tips on partying in a beach setting…

You’re going to be automatically put into a fantastic, festive mindset, purely because you’re on the beach…My first tip is to soak up all that ambience. Soak up all that atmosphere, look around and breathe in your spring break….being aware that you’re on the beach is half the party. Be grateful for it, worship it, give a tribute, maybe say some thanks to it, and then just enjoy it for all it’s worth.

Advice for young, novice or beginner partiers…

You want to maintain an energy level, you want to maintain your awareness and consciousness so you can enjoy what you’re doing and actually be there as it happens. You don’t want to pass out, you don’t want to croak or die. You don’t want to die or croak like a frog, stay lubricated in your throat and stay hydrated. To me the whole art of partying is to be able to continue to party. Once you can’t party anymore then you’re not partying. It’s as simple as that.

On what to do if the party dies out…

Bring a bird into the mix…Any bird let out of its cage is going to amp things up. You may have seen people get birds trapped in their house by accident…a bird might just fly in and pandemonium breaks loose…Really all the bird is trying to do, it’s not necessarily trying to escape, it’s just trying to party…Let its energy add to the festivities…Let it excite you, and, of course, eventually put it back in its cage or set it free. If you’d like, as a gesture it’s always nice to give it a little bird feed or a dish of water, or maybe even give it a little bird bath.

On the proper amount of speakers to have at a party…

I would have over 342 speakers. That could be any number from 343 to infinity, but definitely more than 342. That’s how many I had at the last party I threw, and I thought it was just a bit shy of the volume we wanted. I want it to be so loud that you cannot talk to the person next to you.

Discussing the value of spray-on sunscreen…

’90210′ star talks to Festiva about his hopes, his dreams and his favorite McAllen restaurant

February 25th, 2011, 12:48 pm by

Diego Boneta played Javier Luna on the CW's '90210.'

Diego Boneta pleaded the fifth when asked about the “90210” season finale. The hunky 20-year-old, who played Javier Luna on the popular CW show, said he’s been sworn to secrecy.

“It’s super, super top secret. I wish I could tell you, trust me. But I can tell you it will be a big surprise,” Boneta laughed in a phone call from his Los Angeles home.

Third Day drummer gives us the lowdown on winning a Grammy, the band’s new album and his Valentine’s Day plans

February 15th, 2011, 1:58 pm by

Drummer David Carr is no stranger to the Grammys. His band Third Day has won four Grammys in the past eight years.

But for the past two years, Carr decided to take a break from the glitz and glamour to enjoy the star-studded show from the comfort of his own home.

“We love being there … but there is something kind of cool about sitting in your pajamas watching the Grammys from your couch,” Carr said.

WIN TICKETS: Plain White T’s at Las Palmas Race Park

February 10th, 2011, 2:09 pm by

Imagine an old-fashioned traveling carnival rolls into the city and sets up in an empty field on the outskirts of town.

Tattered red and white striped tents are set up quickly, and then a soft, white light flickers on, beckoning the curious to find out what lurks behind the scarlet velvet curtains.

This sort of wonder is what Plain White T’s lead singer Tom Higgenson aimed for when he and his band formed the concept for their latest album “Wonders of the Younger.”

Anyone who caught The T’s at Las Palmas Race Park last year should throw expectations out the window. Higgenson hopes to captivate the audience with sight and sound.

“Festiva” spoke with Higgenson about whether he’s giving up the mike to guitarist Tim Lopez permanently, the colorful and creative set created for the tour and Pee-wee Herman.

Congratulations to our ticket winners, Jennifer, Miss Correa, Frida, Torchie and plain white t’s fan. Please check your inboxes for info on how to retrieve your prizes ASAP! Read the rest of this entry »

The group includes last season’s winner Felipe Esparza, Mike DeStefano, Tommy Johnagin, Roy Wood Jr., and Myq Kaplan. The comedians, who battled for comedic supremacy on the reality show, will unite for an evening of comedy.
