Local film ‘Susto’ will be screened for free Tuesday

If you missed the premiere of local horror film “Susto” last month, here’s a chance to catch the flick for free at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Cine El Rey in McAllen.

The film, produced and directed by local Quint Rogers, follows the story of a group of famous paranormal investigators that haven’t been entirely honest about some of their haunted findings. When they take a case to look into the disturbances at a genuinely haunted hotel, they get more than they bargained for.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and admission is free.

‘The Trainee’ web series debuts online

If you missed the world premiere of local-star-studded web series “The Trainee” at CineSol last month, now’s your chance to catch it on its website and YouTube.

The series follows Henry Howell (Raul Castillo), a sidekick-in-training, The Macaw (Michael Ray Escamilla), the sidekick to Shadow Knight (David Barrera), the superhero who fights evil in the City of Angels.

Project-X to be screened Friday in McAllen

The locally filmed horror movie “Project-X” will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at South Texas College in McAllen.

Filmmaker Jose Sanchez shot the zombie flick in the Valley and cast local actors.

Following a biological attack on American soil, residents of a small South Texas town begin to mutate into zombies, hungry for – what else – human flesh. Four unaffected people must survive and discover the truth behind the attack.

The horror film is intended for adult audiences.

Project-X will be featured at the SXSW conference and festival next year in Austin.

‘Search for the Chupacabra’ free screening at Cine El Rey

Take a break from the work week and spend an hour watching a free screening of “Search for the Chupacabra” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Cine El Rey in McAllen.

The 2005 film by CineSol director Henry Serrato takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the legend. Through a mixture of real interviews and re-enactments, Serrato’s mockumentary follows a reporter who is hunting for the truth.

Twilight Saga returns to theaters for one night

Fans of the “Twilight” film series, based on the novels by Stephanie Meyer, will be treated to a return of the first three films to the big screen in McAllen and Harlingen.

“Twilight” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1; “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8; and “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Cinemark Hollywood USA in McAllen and Cinemark 16 in Harlingen.

The screenings include never-before-seen footage, including a clip of Robert Pattinson performing “Bella’s Lullaby,” plus interviews with cast members and footage from fan fests. This is all leading up to the Friday, Nov. 18, premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.”

CineSol 2011 digital scrapbook

Two weekends, dozens of films and several local film industry workers married to create the 18th annual CineSol Film Festival.

The festival offered film fans a look at some shorts, documentaries and full-length features made by, starred in, directed and produced by locals who are working in the industry. CineSol also offered prizes, awards and a 36-hour film race.

ART EXHIBIT: ‘Mexican Horror Cinema’ posters [Oct. 1-29, Brownsville]

An exhibit of Mexican horror cinema posters from the Agrasanchez film archives will be going up Saturday, Oct. 1, and will be on display until the end of the month at the Brownsville Heritage Complex.

Local horror film needs actors

Assemblies of Darkness” is an anthology of horror stories in one flick. The locally produced film will also be shot locally.

Auditions for several roles will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and Saturday, Sept. 10, at the American Legion Post, located at 417 S. Cage Blvd., in Pharr.

Children, teens, young adults, middle-aged and older women and men are needed for roles in the four-films-in-one.

EVENTS: ‘The Little Match Makers’ [Aug. 26 and 27, McAllen]

When 10-year-olds Lily and Pepin meet, more than a friendship is born — the two children, both with divorced parents, decide to play matchmakers.

The film “The Little Match Makers” will be shown Friday and Saturday at Cine El Rey in McAllen. There will be two showings on Friday and three on Saturday. After each screening, director of photography Mario Ortiz will host a question-and-answer session with his son Julian, 13, who stars in the movie as Pepin.

“It’s for all audiences, really. It’s a romantic comedy … and we follow the kids’ whole adventure and their up and down attempts to get their parents to meet,” Ortiz said. “And there’s kind of a surprise ending also, which is fun for the audience.”

Ortiz is an Emmy award-winning director of photography who shot “Scavengers” and “Gone Hollywood” in the Rio Grande Valley.

The multi-cultural and family-friendly film is rated G and full of love, laughs and Elsa native Valente Rodriguez (“The George Lopez Show”).

Harlingen native’s daughter stars in short film featured at CineSol

Sarah-Eve Gazitt, the 8-year-old daughter of Harlingen native Sheri Bowman Gazitt, co-stars in the 2010 short film “Arthur.”

The film is about a young boy named Arthur who uses his imagination to confront a beast in his home and save his family.

CineSol has accepted the award-winning short in its annual film festival next month.
