What I learned at Never Say Never last night

March 16th, 2011, 12:12 pm by

I thought I knew most everything there was to know about the Never Say Never Music Festival — we’ve been writing about it in Festiva ever since it started three years ago — but I’d never actually attended before last night. Being there changed everything. Here are a few things I learned:

Neon Trees light up Mission

March 16th, 2011, 12:09 am by

For a band known for their high energy and fun dance tunes, Neon Trees opened their set Tuesday night with a flat performance.

The Utah-based band headlined the 2011 Never Say Never Music and Arts Festival at Las Palmas Race Park in Mission.

Thankfully, after the first two songs, the band started to sound better, thanks to lead singer Tyler Glenn’s keyboards being rewired so the audience could hear the instrument. Aside from the occasional feedback, the rest of Neon Trees’ set was solid.

Never Say Never: Day 1 continued

March 15th, 2011, 6:50 pm by

5:57 p.m. Breathe Electric inspired a huge and crazy pit … complete with a disembodied panda head (fake, of course) being tossed around.

6: 26 p.m. The Black Cards took the main stage and Pete Wentz told the fans in the dirt and the stands he wasn’t sure about playing a gig at NSN, but he figured it’d be better than sitting at home thinking about stuff … perhaps his break-up with Ashlee?

6:45 p.m. Electronic group The Limousines drew a decent crowd at the PETA 2 stage, but Stephen Jerzak currently has a mass of girls surrounding the NSN stage he’s serenading. The merch tables are likely to get swamped soon.

7:05 p.m. Oh my goodness, the screams from the girls at Stephen Jerzak’s merch table are deafening.

7:57 p.m. An hour later and the line for pics and autographs with Stephen Jerzak is still crazy long. Main stage is still behind schedule, so it’s likely Mac Miller is going on right now.

8:02 p.m. There are so many sunburns. Festival tip #1: Use tons of sunscreen. Festival tip #2: Stay hydrated.
