TOP 80s SONGS: Soft Cell – “Tainted Love”

June 29th, 2011, 9:41 am by

Best cover of a ’60s song ever (with a mini cover of “Where Did Our Love Go”)? Yeah, I think so.

Soft Cell’s 1981 version of “Tainted Love” is an addictive synthpop track that gets stuck in my head for days at a time.

TOP 80s SONGS: Whitesnake – “Here I Go Again”

June 28th, 2011, 10:37 am by

This is my last hair band entry, I promise! Whitesnake didn’t exactly dominate the charts in the ’80s (two hit songs), but my blank tape with the song recorded from the radio was rewound and replayed countless times.

TOP 80s SONGS: Bon Jovi – “Livin’ on a Prayer”

June 24th, 2011, 3:21 pm by

“Livin’ on a Prayer” has to be THE anthem of the ’80s. Aside from the heavily celebrated, feel-good song, take a look at the hair Bon Jovi is rocking there (on his head, people). That’s some classic ’80s hair.

TOP 80s SONGS: NKOTB – “You Got It (The Right Stuff)”

June 24th, 2011, 10:36 am by

C’mon, you knew I was going to include New Kids on the Block in the list. “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” was one of their first and biggest hits ever. And they were so cute! (Except Danny. Sorry, Danny.)

Also, I interviewed Jordan Knight a couple years ago.

TOP 80s SONGS: Stevie Nicks – “Edge of Seventeen”

June 24th, 2011, 9:15 am by

Addictive guitar riff, unique voice and generally epic. What more could you want from Stevie Nicks in 1981? Except maybe that perm.

TOP 80s SONGS: XTC – “Dear God”

This 120 Minutes classic helped usher in the blasphemy that was the ’90s.

TOP 80s SONGS: David Bowie & Queen – “Under Pressure”

June 23rd, 2011, 12:08 pm by

A bass line so good even MC Hammer couldn’t ruin it.

TOP 80s SONGS: Peter Gabriel – “In Your Eyes”

June 23rd, 2011, 10:14 am by

“In Your Eyes” always sounds best blasting from a boombox circa 1986. Even better if the song is playing outside your window at night. Uh, well, scratch that, kind of creepy, right? It worked in “Say Anything” though!

TOP 80s SONGS: Echo & the Bunnymen “The Killing Moon”

June 21st, 2011, 12:27 pm by

Moody, atmospheric and maybe a bit depressing, but seriously awesome describes Echo & the Bunnymen. Several tracks from the 1984 album “Ocean Rain” were totally rad but “The Killing Moon” is the most memorable for me. The band likely snagged more fans when this song was used in the 2001 cult hit movie “Donnie Darko.”
