Weslaco woman on Model Latina TV show

September 12th, 2011, 1:42 pm by

Erika Cavazos used to call Weslaco home. Right now though, the Mexican beauty is keeping things interesting in a mansion in Las Vegas on the cable channel Nuvo TV’s series “Model Latina.”

Cavazos grew up in South Texas, but she flew the coop for New York several years ago and recently moved to Los Angeles where she works as a model and actress.

The fourth season of “Model Latina” is a lot like “America’s Next Top Model,” but it features strictly Latina women. There are 30 cameras set up in all corners of the house, capturing everything the girls say or do.

Only those with Dish Network will be able to watch the show at 9 p.m. Mondays on channel 159, however the first episode of the current season can be seen on Hulu.com.

Watch it to see the first photo shoot and to see which two (no, wait, three!) girls go home.

If you like what you see, follow it up with the second episode.

(SPOILER: Cavazos is still going strong on “Model Latina.”)

Keep an eye on Festiva for a feature with Cavazos soon.

VMA recap: Gaga does drag, Beyonce shows her baby bump

August 29th, 2011, 12:17 am by

For those of you that didn’t watch the MTV Video Music Awards, you didn’t really miss much. Kanye behaved himself, Beyonce showed off her baby bump and Lady Gaga got in touch with her masculine side. But for the most part, the show was pretty lackluster. Just in case you’re curious, here’s a quick rundown of my favorite moments and disappointments.

>>Most entertaining performance of the night: Chris Brown

Hey remember when Chris Brown beat up Rihanna? Yeah, I do too, which makes it difficult to admit he kind of killed it on stage. Say what you want about his past (I’ve said a lot), the guy brings it on the dancefloor. The choreography, the flying and the weird Wu Tang and Nirvana tribute all seemed to work. It was fantastic, even if he’s a horrible boyfriend.

>> Cutest moment of the night: Beyonce announces pregnancy

The night was atwitter with Beyonce pregnancy rumors but nothing was cuter than watching Jay-Z celebrate as she ended her performance with a smile and a belly rub.

>>Biggest disappointment: Amy Winehouse tribute

Amy Winehouse is without a doubt an inspiration to many of the blue-eyed soul singers making the rounds these days (I’m looking at you Adele.) So when MTV announced they’d be paying tribute to the late vocalist, I pictured a Christina Aguilera/Adele/Kelly Clarkson-type tribute. Bring out some of today’s best young vocalists to do a medley of her most moving ballads. Instead, we got the incredibly average Bruno Mars doing “Valerie.” Don’t get me wrong, “Valerie” is a great song but when you’ve got “Love Is A Losing Game,” “I’m No Good,” and “Back to Black,” to choose from, it just doesn’t compare.

>> Worst acceptance speech: Britney Spears

It seems like every year, MTV is hellbent on giving Britney Spears some kind of award. I get the fact that she’s a legendary pop superstar, but I refuse to believe she’s as relevant now as she was in 2001. This year, they gave her the Video Vanguard award, and the stoic 30-year-old read every single word of her acceptance speech from a teleprompter. Wow, you can read Britney! Awesome!

>>Kleenex moment of the night: Adele’s performance of “Someone Like You”

“Someone Like You” is one of the most gut-wrenching songs I’ve ever heard. Watching Adele do a stripped down performance reminded me that you don’t need to dress up like a man, wear a giant cube on your head, or smash a guitar to wow an audience. Sometimes, all you really need is an amazing voice.

>> Most awkward: Lady Gaga

I gotta hand it to Gaga. She knows how to make an entrance. But I still can’t decide if her drag performance will go down in history as awesomely terrible or awesomely genius. Sure, there were moments where I wished she’d drop the Pony Boy shtick (the second and third time she was on stage) but I gotta give her credit for doing something no other pop star has ever done (except maybe Madonna when she was the groom in the Britney/Madonna/Christina wedding.) She seriously does not give a crap what anyone thinks, no matter how terrible it might be.

>> Honorable mentions:

>> Britney and Man Gaga almost shared a smooch on stage.

>> Jonah Hill addressed his haters with a hilarious monologue about his weightloss

>> Bieber thanks God, Jesus, still looks like a girl

>> Katie Holmes was there

A Monster Carwash Reality Show?

August 24th, 2011, 1:35 pm by

Producers of reality television programming are looking into creating a show based on the employees and customers of Monster Carwash Bar and Grill in Edinburg.

The buzz around the potential TV show is growing and filming for a video proposal will begin in the evening Thursday, Aug. 25, according to an employee.

Whether the show will focus on the day-to-day business at the car wash/restaurant/bar or the characters who work there or visit will be determined by what’s captured in the next few weeks there.

It’s the Valley’s chance to be thrust into a national spotlight – will you be there?

David Garcia: The Voice

August 22nd, 2011, 4:47 pm by

Adaptation seems to be an art local David Garcia has mastered.

Last year, the 26-year-old from Mission auditioned for FOX’s “American Idol” in Dallas, but he didn’t make it through to the next round.

This year, Garcia tried for a spot on NBC’s “The Voice.” The singer was the winner of a local Valley contest held by KVEO Channel 23, an NBC affiliate, which paid for him to attend the audition in Houston.

Garcia said there were noticeable differences between the auditions for “AI” and “The Voice.”

Three judges sat in front of the singers in a packed arena for “AI.”

“Everybody is thrown into the same room … and everyone is singing (at the same time),” Garcia said. “It’s so stressful.”

The setup for “The Voice” was more tolerable, and Garcia didn’t have to stand in line all day. One judge sat in a room where Garcia and nine others gathered to show off their talents.

“‘The Voice’ was a little better,” Garcia said. “It was more one-on-one.”

As the lead singer for local band Tanke, Garcia has shifted his musical style and genres to change with the demand.

“We started doing a little more hip hop because that’s what people wanted, you know, downtown,” Garcia said.

So the former rock and blues band added more funk, r&b and hip hop to their repertoire.

“There are rock bands still down here, but they’re not gigging as much as they used to,” Garcia said. “I’m fortunate to have at least two gigs per week.”

While Garcia didn’t make it to the next round for “AI” last season or “The Voice” auditions last week, he’ll keep singing.

“It’s weird how I just transitioned,” he said. “The Valley changed with downtown, and I just went along with it. I just like music, so I’m not going to just not do music because nobody wants to hear rock. I’m going to go out there and find the music people want to listen to and play it.”

MasterChef chooses 18 for next round

June 14th, 2011, 8:31 pm by

In tonight’s episode of “MasterChef,” the 38 home chefs vying for the top prize of $250,000 had to put their knife skills to the test. McAllen teen cook Seby Joseph, 18, flew through his apples and impressed Chef Gordon Ramsay with his skill and speed. He was chosen as the first competitor to move through to the second part of tonight’s competition.

The group was whittled down to 24, and in part two of the test the cooks had to present an innovative chicken dish which highlights the protein. Joseph prepared a French and Indian-inspired plate which seemed to intrigue the judges. While the chicken had some good spice, Ramsay said it was a bit too sweet, and Joseph was sent home.

Check out this article about Joseph, and keep reading The Monitor for an upcoming follow-up story about the inspiring local teen.

MasterChef keeps us wanting more

The Fox series has yet to reveal whether McAllen’s own Seby Joseph moves on to the next round, so we’ll have to keep watching next week.

So stay tuned for more drama, food and some seriously harsh glares from Joe Bastianich. What is up with that, anyway?
