Bowl for a Cure for Cancer at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen

Join the RGV Canvas Warriors and Canvas Dolls to help raise money for a local battling cancer at the “Bowl for a Cure for Cancer” event from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen.

Five-dollar donations will be accepted at the door, and $13 will get you all the bowling you can fit into a four-hour window. Snap photos with local boxing and MMA fighters and the Canvas Dolls.

All proceeds will go to the Martinez family to help offset medical costs.

Shop locally for the holidays at J’aime Les Livres on Friday

Local bookstore J’aime Les Livres (I Love Books) in McAllen will be holding a special holiday shopping event at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.

At least a dozen local vendors will have Christmas items on sale. Also, for those who bring canned food items to benefit the Food Band of the Rio Grande Valley, there will be some sweet treats.

Rock for Hunger concert next week at Capellini

Six local bands will be fighting hunger by throwing a benefit concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Capellini Bar and Patio in McAllen.

For a donation of $5 (or $3 and two canned goods) to the Food Band of the Rio Grande Valley, enjoy the original sounds of Darm Darm Dudes, The Equations, The Ex-Boyfriends, Tim’s Myth, Sick/Sea and Land Locked Pirates.

There will also be five artists selling original work, drink and food specials.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and when the music ends, there will be a holiday movie screened outside.

Freebirds World Burrito to officially open Thursday in Mission

Those eagerly anticipating the opening of the burrito chain Freebirds have a short wait since the restaurant will officially open to the public at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in Mission.

As a bonus for the most eager: The first 25 people in line will receive free burritos for a year.

However, the restaurant will have a couple of sneak peeks for the public and money earned will benefit two local organizations.

Freebirds will open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, and the burrito-ers will offer free food and drinks to 250 guests who make a donation of at least $5 to Mission Regional Medical Center.

Freebirds will open again from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, and 250 diners will get free food and drinks for making a donation of at least $5 to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.

Freebirds is located at 2521 E. Expressway 83; Suite 600, in Mission. The restaurant’s regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Weslaco Museum’s annual Pan de Campo event set for November

The Weslaco Museum will be hosting its annual Pan de Campo fund raising event at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.

Enjoy chili and pan de campo, beer, wine and live music. The casual event will include a silent auction with items such as art from local artists and jewelry.

Robert Earl Keen to perform at charity event in Mission

Texas country mainstay Robert Earl Keen will be headlining a concert which starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Las Palmas Race Park in Mission.

Joining the country singer is Grady Skelton and local opening act Last Call.

The Friends for Hope seventh annual charity event raises money for the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic in McAllen.

Smashburger and the RGV Food Bank team up to help feed hungry

Bring in five non-perishable items to Smashburger on Thursday, Oct. 27, and your kids will eat for free at the restaurant located at 1020 W. Nolana Avenue in McAllen.

The donated items will go to the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank to help feed the hungry in the Valley.

Non-perishable items needed include canned soup, meat and beans, pasta, rice, cereal and oatmeal. For every five items donated you’ll get a free kids meal certificate.

Keka Kuri’s art featured at Fiorella

The contemporary artist’s exhibit will benefit Miradas de Esperanza, an institute for the blind located in Reynosa, Mexico.

Weekly knitters club starts in October

Avid knitters will be meeting for The Adult Literary Knitters Club each week starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg.

Each Thursday through Dec. 15, the club will meet to work on knitting hats, which will be donated to Estrella’s House, an organization which provides a safe place for victims of child abuse.

Zumbathon to benefit Valley AIDS Council in Brownsville
