Miss May I scheduled to play in March at Cine El Rey

 Miss May I will headline the show set for Thursday, March 29, at Cine El Rey in McAllen.

The last time the Valley saw the metalcore band, Miss May I was playing support for The Devil Wears Prada, last summer in Mission.

The band will be heading back to the studio in January to record a third album. Miss May I’s album “Monument” squeezed into the Top Ten of Billboard’s Hard Rock chart last year.

Touring with Miss May I are bands Whitechapel, After the Burial, The Plot In You and Structures.

Sleeping With Sirens brings 2012 tour to McAllen

Sleeping With Sirens is set to play Sunday, March 18, at Cine El Rey in McAllen.

In 2010, rock band Sirens joined Drop Dead, Gorgeous as support, and made a stop in McAllen. The band has two full-length albums, and its latest release peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s Hard Rock chart.

Opening the show are bands Abandon All Ships, Secrets and Conditions.

Local band to play debut concert next month at Cine El Rey

Local band The Writing Season will be performing live for the first time at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at Cine El Rey in McAllen.

Lead singer and songwriter JJ Juarez, who local pop fans may recognize from defunct bands The Final Stretch and Madore, only intended for The Writing Season to be a studio project, but friends and fellow musicians convinced him to make it something more, he said.

Also performing at the concert are locals Venture the Wilderness, Land Locked Pirates, The Plea of Ariel and An American Dream.

Local musicians rally to support child advocacy center

McAllen’s Cine El Rey will host An Evening with Shawn Elliot and Friends, a charity concert aimed at raising money for a children’s advocacy center, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17.

Admission costs a $10 donation or $7 and a toy. Performers include rapper Shawn Elliot, Kim Snyder & Keytar Dreamz, Evolve & Mike Nyse, Lamar Jones and more. All proceeds go to Estrella’s House: Children Advocacy Center.

Cine El Rey to screen film about controversial comedian

McAllen’s Cine El Rey will hold a free screening of “Lenny,” the 1974 film starring Dustin Hoffman about controversial comedian Lenny Bruce, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The theater in Downtown McAllen shows a free movie every Tuesday. This week’s event also includes an introduction and commentary by local comedian Mario Salazar.

Pulga Wars premieres in McAllen

Local director, actor and producer Javier Solis will be premiering his film “Pulga Wars” with three screenings starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Cine El Rey in McAllen.

The film stars Solis as a worker at a local pulga who has some anger management issues.

At the premiere, Solis will also be performing an original song titled “Si Se Puede.”

‘Spring Awakening’ [Aug. 20, McAllen]

This play, which is set in 19th century Germany, is a story of adolescent self discovery told through the eyes of three teenagers. It contains explicit language and adult themes. Due to controversial subject matter, the original play was banned in Germany.

Musically, the show is a mix of grunge, alternative and rock. Fans of both live theater and live music will appreciate this show.

The Broadway production won a whopping eight Tony Awards, including accolades for musical, direction and best actor.

Tickets cost $10.

“Night on the Town” auditions set for Sept. 5

Auditions will be held for the McAllen Music Theatre C ompany’s production of “Night on the Town.” People interested in auditioning should come prepared with 1 to 2 selections by Andrew Lloyd Webber, along with an instrumental accompaniment track on CD or mp3. The company is seeking people over the age of 15, but minors will need a signed release form from their parent or guardian. Forms will be released soon for download.
