Watch the Rio Grande Valley Ballet perform ‘The Nutcracker’

October 3rd, 2011, 1:45 pm by

The Rio Grande Valley Ballet is continuing the tradition of an annual performance of “The Nutcracker” after nearly 40 years.

This year, the ballet will be performed twice for public audiences at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, and 2 p.m. Sunday Dec. 11, at the McAllen Civic Center.

Students from across the Valley have been able to see a matinee show with their classes since 1973, and for only $2 per student. Some families can’t afford the $2 tickets, but a few lucky schools are getting sponsored by a Houston-based organization.

Deborah Case, artistic director for the dance company, said she was thrilled when the Raul Tijerina Jr. Foundation contacted her last year to offer to pay for all of the elementary students in Edcouch-Elsa.

“It was really a blessing that they could do this because so many schools are not able to come to shows, but with the foundation’s help, it’s a win-win for everybody,” Case said.

This year, the group will be treating Mercedes elementary students to a show.

WHEN: 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10; 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11

WHERE: McAllen Civic Center, 1300 S. 10th Street

COST: $20 to $30

BUY TICKETS: McAllen Convention Center box office or online at http://www.ticketmaster.com/
