Winterfest 2012 to come in January

Abundant Grace Community Church will be hosting their fourth annual Winterfest from Thursday, Jan. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 22, in Edinburg. 

This four-day extravaganza will be filled with loads of fun for the entire family with everything from carnival rides to arts and crafts, live shows and food vendors.

The show is free and produced by the church’s children’s choir.

Chris-myth Busters church concert set for Saturday in Edinburg

Discover a few answers to some Christmas myths through a children’s choir event at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Edinburg Seventh Day Adventist Church.

The musical includes songs such as “We Three Kings,” “God Has Come” and “What Child is This?” The play and musical are written by Dennis and Nan Allen.

Edinburg High School presents ‘The Producers’

Edinburg High School will host a production of “The Producers” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, and running through 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, in the school’s performing arts center.

Admission to the classic Mel Brooks musical costs $3 for students and $5 for adults.

La Pastorela will be performed in December at Museum of South Texas History

Coordinators at the Museum of South Texas History hope to rekindle an old tradition of performing La Pastorela near the holidays with a show at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in Edinburg.

The play tells the story of the birth of Christ from the shepherds points of view. Actors portray the men who are visited by an angel, and then follow the bright star to Bethlehem. However, along the way, the shepherds must take on challenges from the Devil. The story is told with a touch of humor.

There will be food, vendors and the play will be performed outdoors.

Edinburg CISD starts its annual toy drive

The Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District has begun its 2011 Children’s Christmas Toy Drive, which will end mid-December.

By the end of the drive, Edinburg’s district is hoping to pack a large school bus with toys. The Edinburg volunteer fire department, a couple of county officials and bus drivers will deliver the toys to children in Edinburg colonias.

Toy donations are being accepted at the Central Administration Building, located at 411 North 8th Avenue, and elementary and secondary schools throughout Edinburg.

Medieval Fair will be held Tuesday at BETA High

Take a journey to Europe and the middle ages without leaving the Rio Grande Valley. Students at BETA High School will be hosting the annual “Medieval Fair” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the campus in Edinburg.

Dressed in proper attire to tell the stories of those who fought in the Crusades and the Hundred Years’ War, students will help visitors learn what it was like centuries ago.

There will be food, drinks, games and music. Also, plays will be performed based on the Arthurian legend.

The fundraiser is a free event, but guests will need to purchase tickets, which are used for buying concessions.

Astronomer to speak Tuesday at UTPA

Gaze at the starry sky with Dr. Phil Plait, “The Bad Astronomer,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

Plait will be speaking about scientific myths and he’ll answer some questions about astronomy. He will have books for sale, and afterward, observe the night sky with the scientist.

Free healthy cooking class offered UTPA

Eating well is easy once you learn healthy cooking, and the University of Texas-Pan American wants to help you with a free class.

The instructors at the Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex will be teaching the public how to make a variety of tasty and healthy foods at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Edinburg.

Learn how to make dips and desserts, such as roasted garlic and red pepper hummus and banana mousse.

The class is free and open to the public, and is on a first-come-first-serve basis.
