EVENTS: Paper craft workshop [Sept. 24, Weslaco]

Kids will learn how to make paper flowers and papel picado, a Mexican folk art where one cuts intricate designs into paper, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Weslaco Museum.

King Tut exhibit at UTPA

Soon you’ll be able to view King Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Rio Grande Valley – well, sort of.

The Egyptian pharaoh’s treasures have been recreated for “Tutankahmun: Wonderful Things from the Pharaoh’s Tomb” exhibit, which will be on display Monday, Sept. 26, through Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the University of Texas-Pan American’s visitor center.

You’ll get to see more than 100 artifacts and explore the history and life of a child ruler.

EVENTS: S.T.A.R.S.E.E.D Benefit Concert [Aug. 27, McAllen]

A benefit concert and art expo will be held for a new alternative music school from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Palmas Sports Club in McAllen.

The South Texas Alternative Rock School for Entertainment Education and Development (S.T.A.R.S.E.E.D.) is holding the fundraiser to help start the new music school, which will serve the community like the “Boys and Girls Club,” but with a focus on music.

Local acts such as Land Locked Pirates, Evolve, Brio, Closed Campus, At War With Androids and DJ Koopa will be providing the live entertainment. There will also be art, fashion, drink specials and food.

EVENTS: STEP Camp [August 9, Edinburg]

Gain a leg up on your academic competition by attending the last Striving Toward Educational Pathways Camp from Tuesday, Aug. 9, through Friday, Aug. 12, at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

Faculty members from UTPA will focus on building critical thinking skills and self-esteem for students enrolled in the STEP camp. Students aged 11 to 17 years old will also work on team building skills and learn from activities including robotics, gaming and engineering.

EVENTS: Dichos’ Children’s Program [July 16, Weslaco]

In parts of Latin America, bus drivers are known for inscribing dichos, or sayings, proverbs or expressions, on the bumpers of the buses. An art exhibit celebrating the tradition of dichos will be on display until Aug. 13, at the Weslaco Museum.

A program to help teach children about dichos will be available at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at the museum. Little ones ages 5 to 10 will learn about the custom, and then they will make their own dichos on paper.

EVENTS: Nature Tram Tour [July 16, Alamo]

Explore nature from the comfort and shade of a tram on Saturdays this summer at the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge.

Through August, a guided tour of a seven-mile trail will be offered at the park. Learn about the natural habitat, the birds that call South Texas home and take a short hike to the ranch cemetery to learn about the families who lived on the land.

EVENTS: Clownin’ Around [July 17, McAllen]

Help your little clown perfect his or her routine at the “Clownin’ Around” workshop at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen.

Teensy Weensy the Clown will teach children ages 7 to 13 how to create balloon animals, how to become a character, face painting and delivering punch lines to silly jokes.

In a recent article by CNN Money, South Texas College and the University of Texas-Pan American were ranked as the top two most affordable colleges in the country, respectively.

EVENTS: Ballet Workshop [June 6 through June 17, McAllen]

In preparation for the annual holiday performance of The Nutcracker, the Rio Grande Valley Ballet will be sponsoring a week-long ballet workshop for dancers 10 years and older at the Deborah Case Dance Academy in McAllen.

Dancers will receive instruction from ballet master Alex Ossadnik, who trained in East Germany and Yloy Ybarra, who is an alumnus of RGV Ballet.
