Winterfest 2012 to come in January

Abundant Grace Community Church will be hosting their fourth annual Winterfest from Thursday, Jan. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 22, in Edinburg. 

This four-day extravaganza will be filled with loads of fun for the entire family with everything from carnival rides to arts and crafts, live shows and food vendors.

Comedy Warz’s improv teams battle Thursday in McAllen

Monster Jam roars into Hidalgo in January

Watch as monster trucks leap over or crash through obstacles at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, through Sunday, Jan. 22, at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo.

The family-friendly event features giant 10,000-pound trucks, which children young and old may recognize from the popular toys by Mattel.

There will also be matinee performances at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $10.

Medieval Fair will be held Tuesday at BETA High

Take a journey to Europe and the middle ages without leaving the Rio Grande Valley. Students at BETA High School will be hosting the annual “Medieval Fair” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the campus in Edinburg.

Dressed in proper attire to tell the stories of those who fought in the Crusades and the Hundred Years’ War, students will help visitors learn what it was like centuries ago.

There will be food, drinks, games and music. Also, plays will be performed based on the Arthurian legend.

The fundraiser is a free event, but guests will need to purchase tickets, which are used for buying concessions.

Music by the Bay will be held in Laguna Vista

Local rock band Point Blank will be playing the “Music by the Bay” festival at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Roloff Park in Laguna Vista.

The family-friendly free event includes more than a stage of rock music for those who venture out to the park. There will be moon jumps for children and vendors selling food and drinks.

Halloween Night Out Bash planned for Sunday in Penitas

The whole family will be entertained at the Halloween Night Out Bash at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, at Penitas Veterans Memorial Park.

There will be games, moon jumps and a costume contest for children. First place winners will receive $25. The Penitas library will be transformed into a haunted house and there will be food and drinks. Be sure to bring some chairs to watch the Dallas Cowboys take on the Philadelphia Eagles.

Spooky science festival set for Saturday in Weslaco

The Estero Llano Grande State Park will host the fifth annual “Spooky Science Fest” at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in Weslaco.

Learn about ectotherms, or cold-blooded creatures, at the park and join in the crafts, the kids’ costume contest, a night hike, hay rides and scary stories. Interact with live animals and check out science experiments.

Boys and Girls Club hosts Halloween Festival in Edinburg

This year, Halloween falls on a school night, and so does the Boys and Girls Clubs of Edinburg‘s 19th annual Fall Festival and Halloween Carnival in Edinburg.

The festivities begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at The Legacy Center.

There will be costume contests, a kiddie carnival, free candy, a dance contest, a haunted house and concessions.  Also, enjoy live music, a silent auction, bingo and lots of door prizes.

Family fun for free at The Rink

Help The Rink Family Fun Center celebrate its one year anniversary from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, in San Juan.

Everyone gets into The Rink for free. Also, outside there will be face painting, finger painting and moon jumps. A local artist will perform and a DJ will keep the party going while you browse vendor and food booths and enter a grito contest.

The Latin Dreams Car Club will hold a car show, too. Entry will only cost 10 canned goods, which will be donated to the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank.

They’re also looking for graffiti artists willing to do live pieces during the event.
