McAllen needs artists for upcoming Chalk Art festival

McAllen will host a Chalk Art festival this spring on Main Street, and the city is searching for artists to participate in the event.

Artists interested in displaying traditional, contemporary, chalk, pencil and paint art work are encouraged to contact Joe Rodriguez at (956) 686-4357.

Fall Fiesta will be held Saturday in Edinburg

The whole family will be entertained at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church and School Fall Fiesta at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in Edinburg.

Enjoy a talent show, a mariachi band and dance teams.

The event is free and tickets for food and games will be available for purchase there.

South Texas College will host fall fest in Weslaco

South Texas College’s Mid-Valley campus will be hosting a fall festival at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in Weslaco.

The free event will feature a plethora of party games for children of all ages, including a scavenger hunt, costume contests, carnival games and rides, a rock wall, euro bungee, photo booth and human bowling.

There will also be a book fair with storytellers and free children’s books.

Fall Kiddie Fair to be hosted at Weslaco Museum

Children will get to participate in Halloween activities at the Fall Kiddie Fair at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at The Weslaco Museum.

Decorate a trick-or-treat bag, masks and make popcorn hands, and then meet Rocky from Peter Piper Pizza. There will also be a costume contest. All materials for crafts and snacks will be made available.

Carnival of Fright comes to Brownsville

Come dressed in your Halloween best and enjoy the Carnival of Fright Halloween festival for free from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at the Monte Bella Bike Trails and Park in Brownsville.

If you print out an invite from Brownsville Living and present the page at the gate, you’ll get in free for three hours. Regular admission costs $3. The festival continues throughout the weekend, until Monday, Oct. 31.

There will be food booths, arts and crafts, trick-or-treating, a costume contest for children and adults with cash prizes.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Ambassadors of Friends, which provide the elderly with blankets, heaters and socks during the winter.

CineSol 2011 digital scrapbook

Two weekends, dozens of films and several local film industry workers married to create the 18th annual CineSol Film Festival.

The festival offered film fans a look at some shorts, documentaries and full-length features made by, starred in, directed and produced by locals who are working in the industry. CineSol also offered prizes, awards and a 36-hour film race.

Fright Fest film festival seeks RGV entries

The South Texas Film Alliance wants Valley filmmakers to scare up a horror film for Fright Fest, a local film festival.

There’s no entry fee for the fest, but all films must be no longer than 10 minutes and must include one scene of either a set of a wind chimes or a rocking chair. The deadline for submitting your entry is Friday, Oct. 21.

Films will be shown at a screening event at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at the South Texas College building D auditorium, and winners may receive cash prizes.

Omnichan joins Palmfest

From the same people who brought you Omnicon comes Omnichan, a mini anime and gaming convention which will be added to the Palmfest weekend of events.

Omnichan starts at 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, and lasts through Sunday, during Palmfest hours, at the McAllen Convention Center.

There will be a gaming room with fighters, Rock Band and DJ Hero, Kinect games and Wii games. Several video game and card game tournaments will take place. There will be a cosplay competition, vendors and workshops.

For anime fans, there’s going to be an anime movie theater, too.

Palmfest set for next month

Palmfest 2011 is gearing up for its annual celebration Saturday, Oct. 1, and Sunday, Oct. 2, at the McAllen Convention Center.

Now’s the time to register for the popular cook-off, which includes the categories of salsa, pan de campo, frijoles, traditional and gourmet fajitas. Another category has been added for mollejas.

To enter every cooking category, the cost is $175. A total of $3,800 will be awarded to winners, plus custom mini barbecue pit trophies.

El Grito de Independencia

Celebrate independence all weekend long starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the McAllen Convention Center.

The free event features a performance by Ramon Ayala, Mariachi 7 Leguas and Ballet Folklorico.

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, the celebration continues with a craft fair.
