Bowl for a Cure for Cancer at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen

Join the RGV Canvas Warriors and Canvas Dolls to help raise money for a local battling cancer at the “Bowl for a Cure for Cancer” event from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen.

Five-dollar donations will be accepted at the door, and $13 will get you all the bowling you can fit into a four-hour window. Snap photos with local boxing and MMA fighters and the Canvas Dolls.

All proceeds will go to the Martinez family to help offset medical costs.

Lamar Academy needs items for garage sale fundraiser

Lamar Academy will be holding its annual garage sale fundraiser for the International Baccalaureate program from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the school located at 1009 N. 10th Street in McAllen.

The school needs donations from the community. Bring your old furniture, linens, home decor, exercise equipment, electronics, DVDs, toys, books, clothing, jewelry and purses to the IB office at Lamar Academy through Friday, Oct. 21.

Golf tournament to raise money for Valley students

Tee up to help send a local Valley student to college and you could win a golf trip for two to Las Vegas.

United Blood Services will be hosting the first annual Golf For Life tournament fundraiser at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 11, at the Palm View Golf Course in McAllen.

UBS collects more than half of the blood needed in the RGV through blood drives at local schools, so to give back, the organization provides more than $15,000 in scholarships to students.

Golf For Life will raise money for those scholarships and awareness on the importance of donating blood.

Golfers will receive beer, lunch and dinner at the event, along with gift bags, prizes and a chance to win a golf trip for two in Las Vegas.

Iron Chef competition returns to RGV

The Club at Cimarron will host the fourth annual Iron Chef Competition, a battle royal between local culinary masters, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9.

All proceeds from this event benefit the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. Competitors hail from across the Valley, from South Padre Island to Rio Grande City.

Brownsville Heart Walk set for October

Help the Brownsville Heart Walk reach a goal of $70,000 by donating and joining the walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Brownsville Sports Park.

The day-long event starts with registration at 7:30 a.m., the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and then family fun activities will start at 2 p.m.

The Mission Historical Museum will be honoring locals for their contributions to the history of Mission at a banquet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Cimarron Country Club in Mission.

Dinner will be served and then there will be a presentation to thank those who will be featured in the museum’s hall of fame.

There will also be a silent auction and a drawing for prizes, such as a flat screen television, a weekend for two at South Padre Island, electronics and tickets to the Rio Grande Valley Symphony.

Tickets for the banquet cost $35 per person, and raffle tickets are $10 each. Proceeds from the event will benefit the museum.

Friends in Need will host a barbecue benefit for the family of Abel Padron at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at the McAllen Cahmber of Commerce parking lot. The family is looking for help to pay off medical expenses. Barbecue plates, which include half a chicken with all the trimmings, will be sold for $7. Presale tickets can be purchased at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce.

Hobo Hap’nin Reunion tickets on sale

The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce Depot Restoration committee is currently selling tickets to the Hobo Hap’nin Reunion, which will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce.

Money raised through ticket sales and silent and live auctions during the event will go toward preserving the Southern Pacific railroad station. There will be live entertainment and dinner served.

EVENTS: Empty Bowls Fundraiser [Thu. Sept. 22, Pharr]

The annual Empty Bowls fundraiser and silent auction presented by the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Pharr Events Center.

More than 30 local restaurants will offer samples of food at this event which aims to raise money to help feed the hungry. The local event also features handcrafted bowls created by local students, artists and volunteers. The unique pieces of art are souvenirs for those who attend.

Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased at Food Bank RGV’s website.
