Valley Symphony Orchestra continues Chamber Concert series Saturday in McAllen

The Valley Symphony Orchestra will feature Russian pianist and poetess Elena Baksht for the second concert in the organization’s chamber series at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen.

Baksht will be performing both music and poetry.

The night will include the music of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky, plus poetry by Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Blok and Osip Mandelstam.

UTPA students to perform play at IMAS on Saturday

University of Texas-Pan American professor Dr. Phil Zwerling presents his play “The History of Mexico: A Dream Play” at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen.

The 10-minute play about the conquest of Mexico will be performed by seven UTPA students twice on Saturday, as part of the musuem’s Dia de los Muertos celebration.

McAllen’s International Museum of Art and Science will host El Festival de las Veinte Flores: Day of the Dead Celebration starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30 and continuing through the week.

The fun will include festivities for children and adults.

Valley Symphony Orchestra to play Oct. 22

The Valley Symphony Orchestra will play its next chamber concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at the International Museum of Science and Art in McAllen.

The performance will feature the due of Tido Janssen on cello and Stacy Kwak on piano, playing a work by Chopin and three Spanish-tinged pieces.

Halloween mask class offered at IMAS in McAllen

Learn how to create your own mask for a Halloween costume at the holiday craft classes offered Saturday, Oct. 22, at the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen.

There will be two sessions available for children ages 5 to 13, at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sign up for a class soon because each one is limited to 30 children only. All materials are provided.

New art exhibit opens at IMAS

McAllen’s International Museum of Art and Science will host Ines de Leon’s “Men of Time,” an exhibit inspired by Paleolithic cave paintings, starting Thursday, Sept. 22. It will be on display through Sunday, Jan. 29.

De Leon, who has studied in Europe and displayed work in both the United States and Mexico, has long drawn inspiration from these cave paintings. There will be an opening reception 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at IMAS.

This annual event includes magic shows, face painting and a chance to experience the museum’s exhibits.

The McAllen Police Department and McAllen Fire Department will also be on hand to interact with the little ones. The idea is to get young students excited and ready for the upcoming school year with one last day of fun.

And it’s all free.

Give back to the community by eating and drinking. The RGV Food and Wine Tasting event starts at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the International Museum of Art and Science.

Local restaurants and vendors will offer samples of food and wine for the event which benefits Mujeres Unidas, a local shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

There will be a silent auction and entertainment.
