Mexican Independence Day celebration this weekend

A special Mexican Independence Day celebration will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, and Sunday, Sept. 11, at the McAllen Convention Center. The event will feature Mariachi 7 Leguas, Ballet Folklorico “Raices de dos Tierras” and Ramon Ayala. The event will also feature a market where arts and crafts will be sold. Celebrate McAllen’s 100th anniversary Thursday Sept. 29, at the McAllen Convention Center. The evening will include a wine reception, a dinner, historical presentations and the Valley Symphony Orchestra’s “Concert of the Century.” The event is an optional black tie event. EVENTS: South Texas Fighting Competition [August 12, McAllen]

Spend tonight watching the Valley’s toughest fighters battle at the McAllen Convention Center. Valley Motion Magazine will be hosting its 16th annual South Texas Fighting Competition. Eight fights will be held and as well as a meet-and-greet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with Antonio “Big Foot” Silva and Fabricio Werdum.

The bouts are as follows: Danny Salinas vs. Ivan Perez Rubalcava, Deejay Fuentes vs. Randy Villarreal, Luis Vega vs. Andrew Garza, Frank Trevino vs. Andrew Garza, Saul Elizondo Vs. Mike Sierra, Mike Tinajero vs. Johnny Garcia.

Fiesta Marathon set for Dec. 11

It may be a couple of months off, but it’s never too early to start training for a marathon. Fiesta Marathon is a 26.2-mile run scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 11. The event will also include four additional races including the Marathon Relay Team, Michelob Ultra Half Marathon, Half Marathon Formation Team and the 5K Fitness Run/Walk. Grammy award winning artist, Olga Tañon, performing at the McAllen Convention Center on July 16.

The popular merengue and pop singer started her career in the ‘80s and has enjoyed a fair amount of success with the band Chantelle and as a solo artist.

Tañón, or  “Mujer de Fuego” (“woman of fire”), as she referred to by her fans, recently released the album “Ni Una Lagrima Mas.”

EVENTS: RGV Salsa Heat Wave [July 15, McAllen]

Kick up your heels for the third annual RGV Salsa Heat Wave. Join the pre-party at 9:30 p.m. Friday, July 15, at Alhambra in McAllen. The salsa congress starts the next morning with workshops at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at the McAllen Convention Center. 

In four separate ballrooms, world-renowned salsa dance instructors will host lectures and workshops. Some of the instructors include Troy Anthony, Kimberly Rivera, Ismael Otero and Shani Talmor.  

Saturday evening the Convention Center will come alive with salsa music performed by Son 7 Band. DJs David Cruz and Hector Vasquez will also be featured. Dancers include Brittney Vega, Adrian Tenorio and Roy Hernandez Ruiz.

Muve Music concert series begins in June

The Muve Music summer concert series debuts this summer with three shows, and the first starts at 5 p.m. Friday, June 10, at the McAllen Convention Center.

Three stages outside will feature local and national performers from DJs to acoustic acts.

Vendors will line the walkways offering jewelry, crafts, art and clothing. There will be concessions, games and activities to go along with the hours of music.

Some of the artists playing include Cyfa, Brio, Ideophonic, Radar, LandLocked Pirates, Fresco, Jonathan Lopez, Adam Wratten and Southern Train.

Admission is free but concert-goers will need to register for the concerts.

EVENTS: Crawfish Boil [April 29, McAllen]

Tis the season to get your hands on some mouth-watering Cajun treats. It’s time to take a day off from your diet and indulge on an epic Louisiana feat at the McAllen Convention Center . The Rotary Clubs of McAllen will hold their annual Crawfish Boil Friday, April 29. A whopping 5 tons of crawfish will be prepared, along with 1,000 pounds of andouille sausage and over 5,000 ears of corn with potatoes. Ice cold beverages will be available, and the sounds of Zydeco band The Mudbugs will provide the soundtrack for a true Cajun experience.
