Outta Town Dance Hall to host Legendary Dream Dance

Six tejano superstars will be performing at the “Legendary Dream Dance” over two days starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Outta Town Dance Hall in Mission, and then at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at KC Hall in Mercedes.

Grammy award-winning artist Carlos Guzman, Freddie Martinez, Joe Bravo, Agustin Ramirez, Sunny Ozuna and Carlos Miranda will play at the dances.

Tickets cost $25 per person for each dance.

Christmas Country Music Bash set for Thursday in Mission

Hold onto your hats country fans, there’s a Christmas Country Bash set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Las Palmas Race Park in Mission.

This early holiday gift features Roger Creager and Cody Johnson, with local band Last Call as the opening act.

In 2001, Creager was named “Entertainer of the Year” at the Texas Music Awards, and he’s still living up to the title with five albums, and live shows throughout the state.

Creager is ready to release a new album next month, but fans can listen to the new tracks on his website. It being the holidays and all, he’s likely to play a few at the concert, too.

Johnson hasn’t been in the music business as long as Creager, but he’s already attracting attention from the Texas Regional Music Awards, which named him “New Male Vocalist of the Year 2011.”

While touring as a bullrider, Johnson would sell acoustic CDs out of his truck. Now the singer and guitarist is making music his full-time career.

Mission to host 3rd annual kickball event

Mission’s Sports Complex will host the 3rd Annual Kickball Classic starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26.

It’s a co-ed tournament with all proceeds going to benefit Eddie Vela’s Faith Family Friends Foundation. It costs $285 to register a team and receive team shirts. It costs $200 without the shirts.

UTPA art professor presents exhibit at Upper Valley Art League in Mission

Rey Santiago will be presenting the “Presence Art Collection” with an art reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Upper Valley Art League in the Kika de la Garza Fine Arts Building in Mission.

Santiago is an art professor at the University of Texas-Pan American. Born in Germany, Santiago is an immigrant to the United States and the topic of immigration is reflected in much of his art.

He has participated in exhibitions all over the world, including France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and Australia.

Sharyland High to present ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ this weekend

Sharyland High School students will be re-enacting the popular musical “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, Saturday, Nov. 12 and Monday, Nov. 14 (also at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13), at the school’s auditorium in Mission.

The suspenseful comedy follows Seymour, a generally unlucky-in-life guy who stumbles upon a very special plant that changes the whole ball game for the florist shop assistant.

Freebirds World Burrito to officially open Thursday in Mission

Those eagerly anticipating the opening of the burrito chain Freebirds have a short wait since the restaurant will officially open to the public at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in Mission.

As a bonus for the most eager: The first 25 people in line will receive free burritos for a year.

However, the restaurant will have a couple of sneak peeks for the public and money earned will benefit two local organizations.

Freebirds will open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, and the burrito-ers will offer free food and drinks to 250 guests who make a donation of at least $5 to Mission Regional Medical Center.

Freebirds will open again from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, and 250 diners will get free food and drinks for making a donation of at least $5 to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.

Freebirds is located at 2521 E. Expressway 83; Suite 600, in Mission. The restaurant’s regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Mustang Round-up car show revs up Sunday in Mission

If you love Ford Mustangs, check out the 19th annual South Texas Mustang Club‘s Mustang Round-up car show at 12 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Spikes Ford in Mission.

Register your own Mustang in the show between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6. Registration costs $20 per car (and $5 more for each additional car).

The event is free and open to the public.

Costume contest held by Speer Memorial Library on Thursday

Dress your little ones up in the most creative, cutest and scariest costumes you can create for a chance to win the Speer Memorial Library‘s seventh annual costume contest.

The contest is open to children through 8th grade. Categories include 1- to 3-year-olds, pre-kinder to kinder, 1st-graders to 3rd-graders and 4th-grade students to 8th-grade students. No grotesque or inappropriate costumes will be allowed.

Register for the contest in the children’s department up until 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27.
