Twilight Saga returns to theaters for one night

Fans of the “Twilight” film series, based on the novels by Stephanie Meyer, will be treated to a return of the first three films to the big screen in McAllen and Harlingen.

“Twilight” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1; “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8; and “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Cinemark Hollywood USA in McAllen and Cinemark 16 in Harlingen.

The screenings include never-before-seen footage, including a clip of Robert Pattinson performing “Bella’s Lullaby,” plus interviews with cast members and footage from fan fests. This is all leading up to the Friday, Nov. 18, premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.”

Film crew needs sound and lighting help in McAllen

A Los Angeles-based film production company needs a sound mixer/technician and a gaffer/lighting technician.

Rogelio Agrasanchez Jr., the curator of the Agrasanchez Film Archive, and Alvaro Rodriguez, screenwriter of “Machete,” and “From Dusk Til Dawn 3: The Hangman’s Daughter,” will screen and discuss Roberto Gavaldon’s “Deseada.” The film scholars will discuss “La Epoca de Oro,” an era of Mexican filmmaking from the mid-1930s to the 1960s.  For more information visit www.cinesol.com.

Dive-in Movie [Aug. 20, McAllen]

Los Encinos Pool is offering you a chance to cool off with a dip while taking in a free movie courtesy of Time Warner Cable.

The movie, which begins at 8 p.m., is “Surf’s Up,” a computer-animated comedy based on the revelation that penguins actually invented surfing. In this flick, which features the voices of Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel and Jeff Bridges, a film crew captures a behind-the-scenes look at the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship.

The movie is free, but attendees must pay the normal $2 public swim fee.

Movies in the Park to feature “How To Train Your Dragon”

“How To Train Your Dragon” will be shown  Saturday, Sept. 10, at Archer Park as part of the city’s “Movies in the Park” series. A young viking in training becomes a dragon’s best friend in the 2010 release. The film includes the voices of Gerard Butler, Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera and Jonah Hill.

EVENTS: “People” [August 13, McAllen]

The Armoire Theater, which screens lesbian and gay-themed movies, will be presenting a screening of “People,” a film about a notorious party planner who becomes overshadowed by a scheming competitor. Admission is free but donations will be accepted. Please RSVP if you are attending. The event will raise funds to benefit the Brownsville chapter of PFLAG.

Our favorite pop culture captains

This weekend, movie theaters welcome comic book blockbuster “Captain America,” and edgy Justin Timberlake/Mila Kunis rom-com “Friends With Benefits.” And while it’s easy to fall in love with Kunis, let’s face it, “No Strings Attached” has been there and done that. My weekend pick is set on “The First Avenger.” The Hunky Chris Evans takes on the coveted role of super-soldier Steve Rogers, which will more than likely have Americans saying “Aye Aye Captain” to the bodacious hero. However, we shouldn’t forget the long line of bad-ass American captains that have graced our TV screens. Here are my five favorite men of honor.

McAllen’s Hollywood director Hardwicke hints at next project

Catherine Hardwicke, the McAllen-born director who helmed the first “Twilight” film, says her next film will be similar to her earlier works “Thirteen” and “Lords of Dogtown.”

Hardwicke, who was doing promotion for the home video release of her film “Red Riding Hood,” told reporters the next movie would be shot in Europe and it would be raw and gritty.
