State Farm Arena will host second annual Run at Hidalgo

Take a walk, jog or run at the second annual “Run at Hidalgo,” which starts at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo.

The event starts with an expo and packet pick-up at Academy Sports and Goods in McAllen. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, check out local and national vendors offering various running-related items, such as shoes and clothes.

The half marathon race starts first at 7 a.m., then the relay and then the 5K run and walk. There will also be a kids’ fun mile run. Stick around after the award ceremonies for Hidalgo’s largest cheerleading dance and largest Zumba record.

Grab a bite to eat at the “Finish Line Food Fest” and then enjoy an after party.

Register online no later than Monday, Feb. 13.

Brownsville zoo lights up

Brownsville’s Gladys Porter Zoo will host the holiday tradition Zoo Nights and Lights at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.

The zoo will feature more than 800 luminary bags and 135 lighted animal displays. Children will get to decorate a gingerbread cookie and make crafts. Gift shopping will be available at the arts and crafts show. Also, there will also be local bands and choirs performing live.

Bring a new, unwrapped toy to benefit Toys for Tots as admission for the evening

Register now for the International Friendship Run

The McAllen-area will host the 10K International Friendship Run at 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, beginning at the border and ending at McAllen’s Los Encinos Park.

This is the 26th annual running of the race.

LGBT community to celebrate national coming out day

“Big Day Out” will feature an afternoon of races, contests and games at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Archer Park in McAllen.

Play a game of volleyball, compete in a sack race, egg and spoon race or a three-legged race and enjoy live music and food and drinks.

Watch “Where Do the Children Play,” a documentary about growing up today, compared to 50 years ago, as part of the Nature Speaker Series at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen.

Martin Hagne, the executive director of the Valley Nature Center, will speak about the Texas state mandate “Texas Children in Nature” and he will discuss the events and programs planned to help get kids outside again.

Spooky science festival set for Saturday in Weslaco

The Estero Llano Grande State Park will host the fifth annual “Spooky Science Fest” at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in Weslaco.

Learn about ectotherms, or cold-blooded creatures, at the park and join in the crafts, the kids’ costume contest, a night hike, hay rides and scary stories. Interact with live animals and check out science experiments.

Register early to participate in the “Speak Up For Kids CASA 5K” run and walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Rio Hondo City Hall.

The event is presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas to help the local Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) programs and the volunteers who speak for abused and neglected children in the foster system.

The city of Edinburg is hosting a bicycle awareness event to help promote safety for bicyclists. The event starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Edinburg city hall.
