Causeway run returns to the Island

Port Isabel, South Padre Island and the space in between will host the 28th annual Longest Causeway Run and Fitness Walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.

SPI Chili Expo seeks cooks for event

The annual South Padre Island Chili Expo kicks off at noon Saturday, Feb. 4, at Louie’s Backyard.

Teams can enter the cook-off for $35, and the event is looking for cooking teams to sign up now.

SPI to host annual anime convention

South Padre Island’s Hilton Garden Inn will host Banzaikon 2011, a gathering of anime-related activities, starting at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16 and continuing through Sunday, Dec. 18.

Celebrate South Padre Island

The Museum of South Texas History will host “Fandango!,” a dinner and tribute to the role South Padre Island has played in this region’s heritage, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.

Cocktails will be served first, followed by a surf and turf dinner. There will also be an auction and a drawing. This is a fundraising event for the museum.

EVENTS: Cosplay Cares Coalition [Sept. 30-Oct. 2]

Join the Cosplay Cares Coalition on Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 at the Comfort Suites Beachside Hotel. The mini-convention will hold a special parade and join the Walk for Women’s charity march to fight breast cancer. The event will also feature a multitude of activities for participants including, art exhibits, poetry readings, videogaming, panels, and a pool party.

Musical performances by The Skeptic, The Early Release, Soon to Be, Adios Pluto, OK Robot, DJ Thomas Roux, DJ T-Virus and A Crown in Peril are scheduled. The event will have 24-hour movie rooms, which will screen films according to their genre, including animation, sci-fi/fantasy, action, drama/domedy and horror.

For vendors interested in participating, standard packages are $55 for a 6’ by 8 ‘ space. The Deluxe package which offers a 15’ by 20’ space is $85 and the rockstar package is free for those who rent a double room suite and use the living room area to sell.

Sand Castle Days returns in October

Professional and amateur sand castle sculptors will flock to the Island for Sand Castle Days starting Wednesday, Oct. 19, through Sunday, Oct. 23, on South Padre Island.

There will be tons for families to enjoy, including free sand castle lessons, arts and crafts vendors, competitions and live music.

The hottest day of the year doesn’t have to be spent inside. Head over to the island and celebrate at Indian Summer, an event that will feature live music, bodypainting, headdresses, a bonefire and people dressed like “Indians.”

Live acts include Glasnost, Dancinatra, Lambda, The Square Roots, Moi Je Joue, The Cuttyrs, TZU Gardens, Swiss Guard, The Knight of Phoenix, The Alldays, Oh Broken Remedy, Venture the Wilderness and Velvet Skydiver.

Owners of Ford Mustangs are invited to pack up their sports cars with friends and family and join the South Texas Mustang Club for a cruise Sunday, Aug. 7, to South Padre Island.

Club members in the Upper Valley will meet at 9:30 a.m. and take off at 10 a.m. from the Burger King near El Centro Mall in Pharr; the Mid-Valley drivers will meet at 10 a.m. at the old K-Mart parking lot in Weslaco and start driving at 10:30 a.m.; Lower Valley cruisers will hook up at 10:30 a.m. at the rest area off of Expressway 83/77 at 10:30 a.m. and start their engines at 11 a.m.
