Spend spring break running for charity

South Texas College is giving everyone the chance to spend Spring Break raising money for charity with its 5k or 10k run Spring Break Stampede at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, March, 10, leaving from Bentsen Recreational Park.

There are divisions for all age groups, and the registration fees go to benefit South Texas College.

STC to host nature photography exhibit

South Texas College will host “The Nature of Stillness,” a nature photography exhibit by Ruth Hoyt and Roel Guerra, starting Thursday, Jan. 26, at the school’s Pecan Campus Library Art Gallery.

There will be art talks about the project at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in the Building F Rainbow Room. There will also be a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the same day in the library.

Auditions for The Man Who Came to Dinner to be held next week in McAllen

Several actors will be cast for the South Texas College Theatre’s production of “The Man Who Came to Dinner” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, and Wednesday, Dec. 7, at STC’s Cooper Center in McAllen.

The comedic play features 15 male actors and 9 female actors. All members of the community, 18 years and older, are welcome to try out for the various roles. Auditions will require actors to perform a cold reading from the script.

STC Mid-Valley campus hosts student art exhibit

Weslaco’s South Texas College Mid-Valley Campus will host “Triple A + JJ: Artworks by Amanda De Hoyos, Amanda Owen, Ashley Sanchez and JJ Balli.”

The exhibit opens Friday, Dec. 2, and there will be a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Mid-Valley Campus Library.

Children’s play to be performed at STC

A children’s play will be featured at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, and Friday, Nov. 18, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at South Texas College in McAllen.

The comedy “Happy the Cat Hosts Thanksgiving” was written and directed by local actor Tom Fuschetto.

Admission for children is free, but adults will need to pay $2, and seniors 65 years and older will be charged $1.

STC to host week-long Veterans Day celebration

In celebration of Veterans Day, South Texas College will be offering a week full of free activities with a focus on Latinos and Latinas in the military at the college’s various locations throughout the Valley.

First, STC will feature a lecture from Dr. Emilio Zamora about the life and work of World War I vet, South Texas resident and civil rights activist Jose de la Luz Saenz. The talk begins at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in the Rainbow Room at the McAllen campus.

Filmmaker John Valadez will show his documentary “The Longoria Affair,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Pecan campus library; at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Starr County campus auditorium in Rio Grande City; at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Mid-Valley campus auditorium in Weslaco.

Flag-raising ceremonies are scheduled at three of the STC campuses, including one at 9:30 a.m. at the Mid-Valley campus, one at 11 a.m. at STC’s Technology campus in McAllen and another at 11 a.m. at the Starr County campus, as well as a discussion with a panel of STC students who are also military veterans.

Dr. Joanne Rao Sanchez will close the lecture series for the week with “The Latinas of World War II,” a talk based on her work for the book “Beyond the Latino World War II Hero.” She will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Pecan campus.

The Pecan campus will hold a flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, and the Nursing and Allied Health campus will hold one at 12 p.m. Iraq war veteran Joseph Bohannon will speak at both events.

Throughout the month of November, the Humanities Texas photo exhibit “Images of Valor: U.S. Latinas and Latinos in WWII” will be on the walls of the Pecan campus library Rainbow Room.

STC to host Faculty Exchange Exhibit

South Texas College’s Pecan Campus will host the University Texas-Brownsville Art Faculty Exchange Exhibition now through Friday, Nov. 11, at its Building B Art Gallery.

Admission is free, and the exhibit includes many art forms, ranging from South Texas landscapes to sculptural installations. All the work comes from University of Texas-Brownsville faculty members, including Angel Cabrales, Brad Doherty, Teodoro Estrada, Carlos G. Gomez, Nghi Kroll, Noel Palmenez, David Ransom, Marcia Selsor and Feliz Trejo.

Cabrales and Selsor will present 40-minute lectures about their work at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, and an opening reception will be held later that day at 6 p.m.

Comedian Nate Bargatze comes to STC next week

Comedian Nate Bargatze will be performing a series of free shows Wednesday, Nov. 2, and Thursday, Nov. 3, at South Texas College campuses in McAllen and Weslaco.

Bargatze has performed on the Country Music Television cable channel’s comedy show a few times, made the troops in Iraq laugh, entertained on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and hosted his own “Comedy Central Presents” special.

The Student Life department of STC will be sponsoring several shows which will be open and free to the public.

Bargatze will perform at STC’s Technology Campus West Building Atrium at 12 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2,  and at 7 p.m. at STC’s Mid-Valley Campus Building G Lecture Hall in Weslaco.

He will also perform at 12 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at STC’s Starr County Campus Building E Auditorium and finally at 7 p.m. that evening at the college’s Pecan Campus Cafeteria.

WILD hosts its annual haunted house Thursday and Friday

Writers in Literary Discussion (WILD) will be hosting its 16th annual haunted house from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, and Friday, Oct. 28, at South Texas College in McAllen.

The Halloween event features optical and aural illusions.

South Texas College will host Cultural Fest in McAllen

Texas has a rich cultural history and South Texas College will be exploring it from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in McAllen.

View Dia de los Muertos altars and check out exhibits devoted to tejano and civil wars, the bear clan, fur trappers and Texas Apaches. South Texas Indian and Hwehwe tl Indian dancers will be performing.
