In celebration of Veterans Day, South Texas College will be offering a week full of free activities with a focus on Latinos and Latinas in the military at the college’s various locations throughout the Valley.
First, STC will feature a lecture from Dr. Emilio Zamora about the life and work of World War I vet, South Texas resident and civil rights activist Jose de la Luz Saenz. The talk begins at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in the Rainbow Room at the McAllen campus.
Filmmaker John Valadez will show his documentary “The Longoria Affair,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Pecan campus library; at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Starr County campus auditorium in Rio Grande City; at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Mid-Valley campus auditorium in Weslaco.
Flag-raising ceremonies are scheduled at three of the STC campuses, including one at 9:30 a.m. at the Mid-Valley campus, one at 11 a.m. at STC’s Technology campus in McAllen and another at 11 a.m. at the Starr County campus, as well as a discussion with a panel of STC students who are also military veterans.
Dr. Joanne Rao Sanchez will close the lecture series for the week with “The Latinas of World War II,” a talk based on her work for the book “Beyond the Latino World War II Hero.” She will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Pecan campus.
The Pecan campus will hold a flag-raising ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, and the Nursing and Allied Health campus will hold one at 12 p.m. Iraq war veteran Joseph Bohannon will speak at both events.
Throughout the month of November, the Humanities Texas photo exhibit “Images of Valor: U.S. Latinas and Latinos in WWII” will be on the walls of the Pecan campus library Rainbow Room.
