After a successful run of “Love, Sex and the IRS,” International Theatre of Texas will present an encore performance of the comedic play at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at the Braught Memorial Theater in Weslaco.
A classic farce, “Love, Sex and the IRS” is about two out-of-work roommates who cheat on their taxes by filing as a married couple. When an IRS agent comes knocking, hilarity ensues.

Students at Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North High School will perform the Disney story “Mulan” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, Saturday, Dec. 10 and Monday, Dec. 12, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, in Pharr.
“Mulan” is based on the legend of Hua Mulan, a story about a Chinese woman who joins the army in her father’s place.
Dinner and a show take on a new meaning when you become a part of the show. The Pharr Literary Project and Cultural Center will be hosting Friday Night Murder Mystery “Ho Ho Homicide” starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, and every Friday in the month of December.
About 25 to 50 people will gather for a catered dinner from a local restaurant and each will take on a different character. Before dinner is over, someone will be murdered and it will be up to the dining party to figure out whodunit.
Take a few hours before the mystery theater starts to learn about the history of Pharr. For a few dollars more, take a trolley tour of the town. Each Friday, the trolley will stop at a different location for a more in-depth look at the history of the place.
For the sixth straight year South Texas College will host the South Texas Lyric Opera‘s performance of “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” which tells the story of a hobbled boy prone to lying who encounters the Magi, otherwise known as the three kings who visited baby Jesus.
The show, which is an hour long, will take place 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at STC’s Pecan Campus in McAllen. There will be a second performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Rio Grande City High School’s Paco Zarate Fine Arts Auditorium in Rio Grande City.
Tickets to the McAllen show cost $25 for general admission and $15 for students or seniors. Tickets to the Rio Grande City performance cost $20 for general admission and $10 for students or seniors.
This production is fully staged with a live orchestra.
“Amahl and the Night Visitors” became the first opera specifically composed for American television when it made its debut in 1951. It has become a celebrated part of Christmas in America, and for six years now, it has become a Valley tradition. The South Texas Lyric Opera ranks as the area’s premier opera company.

Take a journey to Europe and the middle ages without leaving the Rio Grande Valley. Students at BETA High School will be hosting the annual “Medieval Fair” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at the campus in Edinburg.
Dressed in proper attire to tell the stories of those who fought in the Crusades and the Hundred Years’ War, students will help visitors learn what it was like centuries ago.
There will be food, drinks, games and music. Also, plays will be performed based on the Arthurian legend.
The fundraiser is a free event, but guests will need to purchase tickets, which are used for buying concessions.

Sharyland High School students will be re-enacting the popular musical “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, Saturday, Nov. 12 and Monday, Nov. 14 (also at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13), at the school’s auditorium in Mission.
The suspenseful comedy follows Seymour, a generally unlucky-in-life guy who stumbles upon a very special plant that changes the whole ball game for the florist shop assistant.
Kathryn Ballinger, a McAllen native and student at McMurry University in Abilene, TX, won the Texas Educational Theatre Association’s annual Playfest competition with her submission of “Things We Can’t Untie.”
She wrote the play earlier this year in a playwriting course and the original play will be performed in the spring of 2012.
In January, the McMurry Theatre department will be given the chance to present a reading of “Things We Can’t Untie” at the TETA Theatrefest in Houston.
The 10-minute play about the conquest of Mexico will be performed by seven UTPA students twice on Saturday, as part of the musuem’s Dia de los Muertos celebration.

Two performances of the comedic Spanish play “Manos Quietas” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at the McAllen Civic Center.
Telenovela star Fernando Colunga leads the cast in this play about political correctness, education, society and humanity. Also appearing in the play are actors Lorena Rojas and Giselle Blondet, and model Aylin Mujica.

Local actor Adrian Peña has been cast as a sailor in the in the comedic musical “H.M.S. Pinafore,” which will air on KMBH TV (Time Warner Cable channel 60) at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14.
The Minneapolis Guthrie Theater’s production of the nautical stage musical will be shown as the first of nine parts in the PBS Arts Fall Festival.
Peña’s love of the performing arts was cultivated in dance school, elementary school and high school in McAllen.
After Peña graduated from McAllen High School in 2001, he attended the University of Texas at Austin for one year, and then transferred to New York University later, where he graduated in 2005.
Peña has performed in several plays and musicals, including “West Side Story,” “Annie Get Your Gun” and a national tour of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”
