UTPA students hold middle eastern fundraising dinner

UTPA and the Arabic Language and Culture Club will hold a Middle Eastern and North African dinner to raise money at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Al Basha Restaurant and Coffee Lounge.

The cost is $40 per person or $25 for UTPA students, and the dinner features a six-course menu. The food ranges from baklava to Moroccan harira soup to hummus.

All proceeds go to benefit UTPA students who are studying abroad.

TUBACHRISTMAS set for Sunday in McAllen

More than 350 tuba players will gather to perform the 23rd annual Rio Grande Valley TUBACHRISTMAS concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at McAllen High School.

Students from the Valley will be participating in the tradition, along with the RGV Tuba-Euphonium Quartet from The University of Texas-Pan American.

Aside from the concert itself, fans of TUBACHRISTMAS will be there to see the tuba-decorating contest.

UTPA art professor presents exhibit at Upper Valley Art League in Mission

Rey Santiago will be presenting the “Presence Art Collection” with an art reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Upper Valley Art League in the Kika de la Garza Fine Arts Building in Mission.

Santiago is an art professor at the University of Texas-Pan American. Born in Germany, Santiago is an immigrant to the United States and the topic of immigration is reflected in much of his art.

He has participated in exhibitions all over the world, including France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and Australia.

Astronomer to speak Tuesday at UTPA

Gaze at the starry sky with Dr. Phil Plait, “The Bad Astronomer,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

Plait will be speaking about scientific myths and he’ll answer some questions about astronomy. He will have books for sale, and afterward, observe the night sky with the scientist.

UTPA students to perform play at IMAS on Saturday

University of Texas-Pan American professor Dr. Phil Zwerling presents his play “The History of Mexico: A Dream Play” at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the International Museum of Art and Science in McAllen.

The 10-minute play about the conquest of Mexico will be performed by seven UTPA students twice on Saturday, as part of the musuem’s Dia de los Muertos celebration.

Free healthy cooking class offered UTPA

Eating well is easy once you learn healthy cooking, and the University of Texas-Pan American wants to help you with a free class.

The instructors at the Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex will be teaching the public how to make a variety of tasty and healthy foods at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Edinburg.

Learn how to make dips and desserts, such as roasted garlic and red pepper hummus and banana mousse.

The class is free and open to the public, and is on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Graduate students will present fine art exhibit at UTPA

University of Texas-Pan American graduate students Victoria Hidalgoand Eduardo Quintero will feature their graduate fine arts exhibit at the university’s Clark Gallery in the Fine Arts building starting Monday, Oct. 24 through Thursday, Nov. 3, in Edinburg.

A closing reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3.

CholoRock Theatre’s choreographer to appear at UTPA in November

Jose Zamora, the artistic director and choreographer for the Texas-based dance group CholoRock Theatre, will be teaching a dance workshop from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.

The workshop will focus on jazz and post-modern dance. It is open to the public and costs $50 per person.

Zamora trained as a folklorico dancer in La Joya, and then relocated to Denton, TX, where he trained in post-modern dance. He created CholoRock three years ago to help preserve and celebrate his Mexican heritage.

UTPA students get chance to meet author Maya Angelou

Students at the University of Texas-Pan American are being given the chance to meet celebrated author and educator Dr. Maya Angelou when she comes to speak at the Distinguished Speakers Series at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium in Edinburg.

The essay contest is open only to students currently enrolled at UTPA. Writers must choose one work by Angelou and discuss how it has connected him/her to the human experience. Essays may not exceed 500 words, it must be typed and in essay form only. The contest deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17.

Entries must be emailed to studentunion@utpa.edu. Each essay must also include a completed entry form, which can be downloaded here.

Panel of distinguished artists to speak at UTPA

UTPA will host a panel discussion with three distinguished artists at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11.

The speakers will be French-Dutch writer and critic Jan Siesling, photographer Elia Arce and sculptor Mark Cloet. Admission to the event is a free. The International Museum of Art and Science will also host a continuation of the discussion at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.
